From the moment I landed in Bora Bora I was pinching myself. It was unlike any beach vacation I had ever been on before and it was unreal. For one, I was there by myself. No one goes to Bora Bora alone, at least that’s what the locals made very clear as they gave me long confused stares everywhere I went. They constantly asked, “where is your husband?” Since I travel most places alone this didn’t bother me, I was used to it. Despite their surprising reactions to my solo trip, the locals could not have been friendlier.
The first noticeable difference between Bora Bora and other places was the fact that there were no roads! I flew in on a very tiny airplane from Tahiti, walked off the plane, into the airport, and then immediately was greeted by a man from Le Meridien holding my name on a sign. He grabbed my bags and asked me follow him outside. Within ten steps we arrived at our luxurious speedboat. When I was comfortably seated, he handed me a tropical drink and said it would be about twenty minutes. As I stared out onto the landscape and perfectly calm turquoise waters around me, I was in paradise.
